Halau i Ka Pono - The Hula School of Chicago
June Kaililani Ryushin Tanoue, MPH is the Kumu Hula. Kumu June went through traditional ʻuniki ritual and graduated as ‘Olapa (Dancer) in 1994, ‘Olapa/Ho’opa’a (Dancer/Keeper of the Chants) in 1996 and Kumu Hula (Master Teacher) in June 2000. Her kumu is Michael Pili Pang.
She started teaching hula in 2003 in New York City and then in 2004 added Chicago. She formally began her Halau i Ka Pono – The Hula School of Chicago™ in 2009 out of her home in Oak Park, Illinois.
We have ongoing Beginner Classes for all ages. We also hold Hula and Zen workshops where we do mindfulness meditation, gentle stretching, learn a hula and some writing.
June is also a fully empowered Zen Priest and Zen Teacher in the White Plum Lineage. She co-founded the Zen Life & Meditation Center of Chicago in 2004 and Zen Center of Hawaii in 1993 with her husband, Robert Joshin Althouse, Roshi.
